While I was born in Melbourne Australia, the island of Sri Lanka has always felt like home. There is an unexplainable feeling when you get off an aircraft, walk through customs, pass the duty-free shops, collect your luggage and take that first step out of the airport. Humidity, coconut trees, friendly faces and humble and helpful people. This is what we will also encounter as we cycle around the island I call home. There is warmth in Sri Lanka that is beyond temperature; it is warmth of culture, family unity, amazing food and true hospitality. Once again, this is what we will witness as we cycle around the island.
Like most places around the world, depression and mental illness is also apparent in Sri Lanka and by cycling around the island we have an opportunity to let people know that they can seek help, that they can talk to someone about their problems and that there can be light at the end of the tunnel by dialing 1333.
It is true, people need to talk about their problems and need to be able to express their feelings. Having someone on the other side of the telephone can be a huge relief and a step forward to a brighter future. A CCCLine1333 counsellor will listen with compassion and will be a comforter for one to express their problems. Cycling around the island is an awareness campaign to let all Sri Lankans know that they are not alone and CCCline1333 is there for help.
I am honored to be apart of CCC Foundation and will be guided by the three C’s: Courage, Compassion and Commitment as we cycle 1333km.
Please sponsor me so we can reach our fundraising target to keep the phone lines open at CCCline1333 for those going through crisis, or simply want to talk to someone about their problems. THANK YOU!
